Need help with a dental extraction question.?

Ok so I had my upper second molar extracted Monday, it was a difficult extraction and they had to cut my gums. Well anyway they stitched them and I have developed canker sores.. which are hurting. I have followed all the rules and haven't ate anything other than soft foods. The extraction site looks like it has a white scab over it. I just called my dentist because all my teeth on that side have been aching.. especially my front tooth on that side, anyway, the receptionist said it sounds like it could be a dry socket.. but we are getting ready to leave for the day. So if it is you can call the emergency number. Do you think this is a dry socket?
