Why is my gas being depleted so rapidly?

I own a ford taurus ses 2003. I just had half of a tank the other day, but now I only have a quarter tank. How did I use up so much gas so quickly? I swear I didn't use up that much gas. I only drove around the neighborhood and my local stores. This is not good. I will be hemmoraging $ if I constantly need to refuel
